The traditional envelope system is one of the oldest budgeting methods: divide your cash into labelled envelopes (groceries, transport, entertainment, etc.) and only spend from each envelope for its designated purpose. When an envelope is empty, you stop spending in that category.
How many digital envelopes should I have?+
Start with 6-8 categories. Too few and you lose visibility; too many and the system becomes a chore. Common starter categories: groceries, dining out, transport, entertainment, personal care, clothing, and miscellaneous.
What happens if I overspend in one envelope?+
Transfer money from another envelope to cover it. The key insight is awareness — you now know exactly where you overspent and can adjust next month. Don't borrow from your savings envelope though; that should be off-limits.
Is YNAB worth paying for?+
If you're serious about envelope budgeting, YNAB's reporting and goal features are worth the £6.99/month for most users. They offer a free 34-day trial. However, Monzo's free Pots feature covers the basics well for casual envelope budgeters.
