The weather penny challenge is a creative twist on traditional saving challenges that turns the British weather into your saving strategy. Each day, you save the number of pennies (or pence) that matches the day's high temperature. If it's 15°C, you save 15p. If it's 22°C, you save 22p.
What temperature scale should I use?+
Use Celsius — it's the standard in the UK and gives manageable daily amounts (typically 5-30p). Using Fahrenheit would roughly double the amounts since UK temperatures in Fahrenheit range from about 40-90°F.
Is the weather challenge worth it for such small amounts?+
On its own, the amounts are modest (£50-60 per year at 1p per degree). But the real value is building a daily saving habit that requires almost no effort. Use a higher multiplier (5p or 10p per degree) for more significant savings, or combine it with other challenges.
